Substack is becoming just another one

A critical reflection on how the newsletter platform yields to the trend of vertical content and the infinite carousel of traditional social media

I woke up thinking about Substack again; although the last time I was looking at the network to write there I came to the conclusion that I didn’t have control, today I saw it, and the first thing I thought was, ugh! another one.

What do I mean by another one? Well, simply that we now have yet another network joining the rest of the digital trash we have today, Youtube, Tiktok, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, all of these that in order to survive add the same thing over and over again, short videos, vertical feed, lives…

And in the end, what we are left with as users is “looking like a fool”. This ends up being an endless stream of ads in an infinite carousel that sucks the life out of us every second. Okay! I make videos of this type too, but if you don’t do it, you get more lost than Waldo.

It was already fucking hard before for someone to find your blog/website or social profile, but now not only is it harder and harder, but you have to jump through hoops with a bunch of things just to get your content seen by someone.

I don’t want to turn this post into an endless rant, but man!… when is this nonsense going to end? I used to look at Substack with quite a bit of admiration, due to the fact that they had managed to make it a place where people went to write and read, “to write and read”, but seeing how things are, they have ended up becoming just another one, offering the same as the others.

Luckily there is still something left deep down, and many creators resist falling into the temptation of joining in to publish endless videos just to feed their ego. I hope that the readers who still wander through its pages don’t leave and hold on, maybe with a little luck the audiovisual format won’t devour the platform.

But I doubt it…
