Why is my Mac so slow

Discover the most common reasons that slow down your system and how to identify what is affecting its performance

There are several things that can cause your Mac to start running slowly. If you are encountering this problem, keep reading because you will surely find that you match one of these reasons.

Lack of disk space

This is undoubtedly the most common problem. MacOS needs to have at least 10GB of available space on the main disk to continue working normally. Make sure to always keep at least 10GB available on your hard drive for the system.

Excess of applications

Having many apps installed on the system is not necessarily a problem on its own, but having many leads to the aforementioned problem of “lack of space,” so it is something to keep in mind as well.

Keep in mind that many applications use background processes (processes you don’t see), and while these processes may require few resources to function, if you add up many small processes, your Mac will start running slower.

Browser tabs

Open tabs in the browser is one of the most repeated problems among users.

Browsers execute new processes for every X open tabs, and each web page requires certain RAM memory and processor resources.

And even though when they are not visible they enter a sort of suspension state, the fact is that this does not always happen.

Connection speed

Sometimes you feel like your Mac is running slow, but it turns out that what is actually slow might be your internet connection.

Keep in mind that many applications—and increasingly more—need a constant connection to external services to function. If those applications have connection problems, you will most likely experience them during use as well.

Limited or full RAM memory

When running applications, even after closing them, part of the RAM memory remains occupied. In these cases, the quickest solution starts with restarting your Mac to free up the occupied memory.

And that is usually what lies behind this problem.
